Of all the varied organs in the human body, the brain remains at the epicenter of human excellence. Though at times we suffer from a poor memory, the brain and its functions remain complex. The recent broadcast on the radio about the brain and its imperfections seems to be an eye opener. With a growing number of diseases and disorders in the world, the Alzheimer’s is one that tops the chart in terms of its incidence in the elderly population. The incredibly powerful brain sometimes performs weird and inefficient. The brain also has bugs and issues which remain the hidden mystery.

Several neuroscientific studies reveal many interesting shortcomings of the brain. The complex brain and the nervous system can overpower any organ of its choice. The feedback cycles and hormones that regulate the food intake in the stomach is a highly devoted system. The digestive system assesses food consumption and signals to stop at the right time, however when the brain comes into play it decides something else. It adds on to the dessert factor when you are already full with the main course. The brain thus interferes with the functioning of other vital organ systems in the weirdest manner possible.

The brain possesses a flexible technique to store and erase memories and information, unlike computers which have a systematized logical setup to store data. The brain utilizes varied techniques to stock and retrieves information on a daily basis. Sometimes it turns out to be less reliable in the most demanding situation. It constantly edits memories which pose difficulties during a recall. A short term memory is said to possess a very short capacity and it gets lost easier when a long term one is encountered. The brain with its episodic memory and a complex assortment of processes require enormous awareness to handle.

It would be indeed surprising for many of us to know that women were forbidden to enter into Antarctica before 1956. Many budding women scientists who wished to research Antarctica were rejected and denied entry. But times have changed now and women stay a step ahead in guiding foremost Antarctic research institutes across various locations. Women hold prestigious positions at the various institutes. A radio telecast recently portrayed women researchers in Antarctica displaying their excellence. The first woman to land on Antarctica was Maria Klenova, a marine geologist by profession. 60 years have gone past and the change should evolve further.

With the technological surge, many studies were carried out on a large scale. Women continue to lead both research institutes at British Antarctic Survey and the Alfred Wagner Institute. The high-profile contribution by the womenfolk towards science and research has been commendable. Women are now the lead authors of various research publications across varied disciplines concerning Antarctica. Though the majority of researchers are women, only a very few win accolades and recognition. The technical research skills of several women still go unnoticed. Profile of such women needs to be raised specifically to enhance their research credentials during their early stages of a career.

Women adapt to the situations easily, thrive well and perform great research at Antarctica. Women from 30 different countries across the globe have established a career for themselves in Antarctic research. The first Asian women from Korea to reach Antarctica is In-Young Ahn. An all-women team guided by Lois Jones has set an expedition to research Antarctica. The latest research in Antarctica focusses on sea octopus. Owing to the rich marine heritage, these octopus have been found to originate in Antarctica. Starfish, sea spiders and sponges offer attractive research potentials. Fish that survive in Antarctica with antifreeze proteins have fascinated several researchers.

kids eating chocolate

So far in the minds of so many parents, the confectionaries have played the role of a baddie. Famous children books portray an obese child galloping more than ten candies a day. But this is not true and it remains fictitious. A Recent meta-analysis on confectionery consumption and its attributes have found that eating confectionery does not result in obesity. On hearing this news in the radio broadcast, children sprang out of joy and reached to their favorite candy. Chocolates and confectionery are associated with delight and not with obesity anymore. Research findings also enlighten that eating confectionery guards against weight gain.

As obesity remains the prime topic of interest for several researchers, factors contributing to obesity were studied in-depth. Many systematic reviews and researches were performed to bring out the association between confectionery consumption and weight gain. Candies and chocolates are the imperative elements of the confectionery category. Research from several countries brought in a unified result. Confectionaries did not result in weight gain in 80 percent of the children because chocolates and candies constituted a small portion of the everyday diet. A small portion of candies does not increase the calories significantly when compared to a bottle of soft drinks.

In addition, parents of obese children further limit, the intake of confectionery in their children. This technique of reduced confectionery consumption controls their weight gain. On consuming, a lollypop candy or a small piece of chocolate, the appetite for sugar seems to reduce which prevents further craving and weight gain. Sugar has always lesser calories when compared to fat. So a bag of chips is dangerous than a candy. However, consumption of more confectionery contributes to tooth decay owing to its increased sugar content. Limit the portion sizes of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar to stay healthy forever.
