The Science Show which has been an attention-grabbing program in all perspectives rendered a beautiful and emotional incubation call by the mother to its unborn offspring. In the latest broadcast, information on the Zebra Finch, an Australian bird communicating to its embryos was vividly depicted. The mother bird sings to its embryo signaling the right atmosphere to make an entry into the magnanimous world. The embryos have the potential to listen to their mother’s song and they respond appropriately to the stimuli. This song rendered by the mother influences the growth and development of the embryos similar to that of human fetuses.

Zebra finch, one among the songbird species of Australia has tremendous potential to develop song production. It was proved with enough research that the embryos could listen. This song is also considered to be a shield which the mother offers to the embryo to encounter the brood parasitism from cuckoos. Research findings reveal that the mother bird begins to communicate only when the temperature is favorable to hatch. During incubation, both parents are involved. The embryo develops a potential to hear during the last week before hatching. After hatching, the little ones grow and continue to vocalize their mother’s tone.

Creative Solutions For Replacing Plastics

plastic burning

As the population continues to rise, it contributes to a similar surge in the use of plastic. Plastics continue to mount up in the near and far vicinity. It does not degenerate easily and also results in severe environmental pollution. The black pungent smoke that arises during the burning of plastic results in several health hazards. Plastics that deposits itself in the environment, rivers and oceans deplete the natural reserve as well as leads to the destruction of flora and fauna. Thus, plastic remains to be a growing menace. The recent telecast featured innovative solutions to substitute plastic with eco-friendly materials.

To offer a permanent solution to the plastic menace, many biomaterials like cellulose that can be easily degraded are used. Cellulose from the woods of the trees are used widely, however, cutting down trees has never been an ideal option. After the harvest of banana, the banana tree remains as a substantial waste as it is an annual plant. Cellulose obtained from a banana tree was utilized to derive a replacement for plastics. It resulted in the production of a strong, complex and translucent plastic with a highly biodegradable tendency. Being a tree that grows quickly its potential use remains manifold.

antarctica

It would be indeed surprising for many of us to know that women were forbidden to enter into Antarctica before 1956. Many budding women scientists who wished to research Antarctica were rejected and denied entry. But times have changed now and women stay a step ahead in guiding foremost Antarctic research institutes across various locations. Women hold prestigious positions at the various institutes. A radio telecast recently portrayed women researchers in Antarctica displaying their excellence. The first woman to land on Antarctica was Maria Klenova, a marine geologist by profession. 60 years have gone past and the change should evolve further.

With the technological surge, many studies were carried out on a large scale. Women continue to lead both research institutes at British Antarctic Survey and the Alfred Wagner Institute. The high-profile contribution by the womenfolk towards science and research has been commendable. Women are now the lead authors of various research publications across varied disciplines concerning Antarctica. Though the majority of researchers are women, only a very few win accolades and recognition. The technical research skills of several women still go unnoticed. Profile of such women needs to be raised specifically to enhance their research credentials during their early stages of a career.

Women adapt to the situations easily, thrive well and perform great research at Antarctica. Women from 30 different countries across the globe have established a career for themselves in Antarctic research. The first Asian women from Korea to reach Antarctica is In-Young Ahn. An all-women team guided by Lois Jones has set an expedition to research Antarctica. The latest research in Antarctica focusses on sea octopus. Owing to the rich marine heritage, these octopus have been found to originate in Antarctica. Starfish, sea spiders and sponges offer attractive research potentials. Fish that survive in Antarctica with antifreeze proteins have fascinated several researchers.
